Mayor Duties

Legislative Duties :

1. The Mayor presides over the meetings of the City Council, the Mayor may vote when the mayor's vote is needed to break a tie vote of the Council.
2. The Mayor has the authority to call the Council into special meetings.
3. The Mayor is required to sign all ordinances, resolutions and City Council minutes.
4. The Mayor may veto any ordinance, resolutions or order adopted by the City Council

Administrative Duties:

1. The Mayor is required to submit a budget to the City Council for approval before December 1st of each year.
2. The Mayor must submit a State of the City Report to the City Council within 60 days after the close of the fiscal year.
3. The Mayor administers the City's day-to-day activities and supervises the city department heads and officers.

Appointment and Removal Duties:

1. The Mayor has the absolute right to appoint the police chief and fire chief. The City Council has no say in the matter.
2. The Mayor has the power to appoint and remove department heads. The City Council has the authority to override the Mayor's action by a 2/3 vote of all members.
3. The Mayor may suspend the fire chief or police chief for inefficiency, misconduct or neglect of duty until the next meeting of the City Council. If the Mayor's action is approved the chief is removed, a majority vote of the Council within 5 days of the meeting may cease the suspension.
4. The Mayor may appoint commissioners, trustees and inspectors.
