Alderman Duties
City Council Members are officers and officials of the City
The City Council:
1. Has the management and control of the City's finances and all real and personal property belonging to the
City.
2. Approves or disapproves an annual operating budget.
3. May pass ordinances and resolutions.
4. Sets the procedures by ordinance for making purchases that exceed the sum of $10,000.
5. Sets the time and place for regular city council meetings in accordance with the State freedom of
information act.
6. May override the Mayor's appointment and removal of department heads by a 2/3 vote of the total
members.
7. May override the Mayor's veto by a 2/3 vote.
8. Call a special election to fill the vacancy of the unexpired Mayor's term of office, if the unexpired term is more than six months.
9. May fill by appointment the vacancy of the office of mayor, if less than six months of term is left.
10. Set the salaries of the Mayor, Council and other municipal officials.
11. May remove, on the Mayor's recommendation, and by a majority vote of the members of the council, the
police chief or fire chief.
